Find Help, Find Hope!

Mission

The families and members of NAMI El Dorado County are here to help!

We offer support, education, advocacy and awareness to anyone concerned about mental illnesses and the treatment of mental illness including co-occurring substance abuse/dependency.

What we do:

We educate. Our NAMI education programsensure our local community leaders, individuals, families and educators get the support and information they need.

We advocate.NAMI shapes national and local public policy for people with mental illness and their families and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to save mental health in all states.

We listen. Our local NAMI El Dorado County warm-lines allow us to respond personally to hundreds of requests each year, providing free referral, information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many.

We lead. Public awareness events and activities, including NAMIWalks, May is Mental Health month, local health fairs, community outreach and participation in community collaboration meetings, successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding. We work with media on a routine basis to ensure our community understands how important mental health is.

Mental illnesses are neurobiological brain disorders that are biologically based medical problems.  Genetics can play a key role as can the metabolic environment.  Untreated, they can cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling and relating. This results in substantially diminished capacity for dealing with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness can affect persons of any age and occur in any family. They are not caused by bad parenting and not evidence of weakness of character.   Like the heart, the human brain is a vital organ whose illness can be successfully treated and the good news is, recovery is possible!

MISSION

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals living with mental illness (including co-occurring addiction) and their families through support, education, and advocacy.  Through community collaboration and education, we advocate for a life of quality, purpose, and dignity – one without discrimination – for all people affected by mental health challenges.

  • Work to identify specific gaps in services/supports within our community and work collaboratively on solutions.
  • Advocate for measurable improvements and quality standards in mental health services and supports within our community.

 OUR VISION

In our envisioned future mental illness will no longer thwart a person’s fulfillment of his or her potential. With early pinpoint diagnoses, interventions and targeted medications and services there is no pervasive disability. Ultimately, we envision a day when prevention or a cure is found.
